MINTOS · TAXES IN SPAIN

Mintos and the Spanish
tax return.

How to prepare Mintos interest, withholding and the tax report for a Spanish tax return. A guide to understanding what to report, where to find it and what to check before filing.

For individual tax residents in Spain under the common tax regime. Box and rate references: tax year 2025, filed in 2026. Navarre and the Basque Country have their own rules. General information without an individual review of your return.

THE STARTING POINT

Gross interest, withholding and net payment are three different figures.

Gross interest1,000 €

Income before withholding.

Withholding tax in Latvia50 €

Check it separately in the tax return.

Net payment950 €

It does not replace the gross amount.

Fictitious example with 5% withholding. These are neither Javier’s account figures nor a calculation of your final tax.

Do you need to declare Mintos in Spain?

Interest from loans and Notes is investment income generally included in the savings tax base. If you file a return, include the interest attributable to that tax year even if it remains in Mintos or has been reinvested.

The general rule attributes interest to the period when it becomes due. A bank withdrawal does not determine the tax year. For overdue interest, defaults or litigation, check the timing rules: a statement of receipts does not replace a tax analysis.

Taxable income and the obligation to file are different questions

The obligation to file depends on all your income and the applicable conditions. The €1,600 threshold for certain income subject to withholding is not a general Mintos exemption: Latvian withholding is not Spanish income tax withholding. Check your full circumstances using the AEAT assistant and manual.

AEAT: who must file a return

1. Download the tax report for the right year

  1. Sign in to your Mintos account and open the profile menu.
  2. Open Reports and find the annual tax report.
  3. Select the tax year you are reporting and save the document and its annexes.
  4. Check the holder, tax identification, residence, currency and period. Reconcile totals with statements for the same year.

Go to Mintos tax reports

Mintos provides the tax report in English. Interest lists interest; Income includes other income and transactions; Expenses lists costs; Write-offs lists amounts written off. Annexes break down products and transactions. Deposits & Withdrawals describes money entering and leaving the account, rather than profit.

Separate gross interest, withholding by country and product, sales or redemptions, bonuses and expenses. Do not copy all of Income into an interest box or report principal repayments as gains. For other currencies, document the conversion into euros and verify foreign taxes.

Each tax year has its own return

The 2025 return covers income from 2025 and is filed in 2026. Income from 2026 belongs to the 2026 return, to be filed in 2027. This guide’s boxes were checked against the 2025 form; they are not confirmed for the following campaign.

2. Put each amount in the right Renta WEB section

Start with the tax year and check any tax data already imported to avoid duplicates. In section B, investment income included in the savings tax base, enter interest at its gross amount.

ItemReferenceWhat to check
Interest from loans and Notes0027Interest from accounts, deposits and financial assets in general. Report the gross amount without subtracting Latvian withholding.
Transfer, redemption or repayment of other financial assets0031This is separate from periodic interest. Classify the transaction and its return, rather than the entire amount received.
Foreign tax on that income0588Double taxation relief, if applicable. In the details, distinguish income included in the savings tax base from income in the general tax base.

Tax paid in Latvia must not be added alongside the interest as though it were Spanish withholding. It is considered under double taxation relief. If your report contains other products or income types, classify them before choosing a tax return box.

3. Check withholding and double taxation relief

Mintos states a 5% withholding rate for individuals with confirmed EU/EEA tax residence, subject to the exceptions in its help pages. As a Spanish resident, check that your profile and report reflect the correct situation. That 5% is not the final Spanish tax.

Mintos: withholding conditions

Double taxation relief is limited to the lower of foreign tax actually paid and the amount obtained by applying the effective average Spanish tax rate to the taxable base after reductions taxed abroad. The applicable treaty must also be considered. Relief does not guarantee full recovery of withholding or a refund.

In the relief details, identify the foreign income and documented tax, retaining the breakdown. Do not confuse the report’s gross amount with the taxable base after reductions used for the limit. Renta WEB calculates relief using the complete return. Excess withholding may need to be reclaimed in the source country.

AEAT: conditions and limit of the relief · Article 80 of Spanish income tax law

An example: €1,000 in interest and €50 withheld

Fictitious scenario: only interest from Notes, without expenses or losses; the entire savings tax base is in the first bracket, the personal allowance is already applied against the general tax base and no other deductions reduce the relief limit. The €50 withheld is assumed to meet the conditions for relief.

Gross interest to report
1,000 €
Foreign withholding tax
50 €
Net payment into Mintos
950 €
Spanish tax in the example: 1,000 × 19%
190 €
Relief allowed in this example
50 €
Spanish tax after relief: 190 − 50
140 €

The example reports €1,000, not €950. The €140 is the Spanish tax attributable to this scenario after relief; it does not predict whether your complete return results in a payment or refund. Total tax in the example is €190: €50 at source and €140 in Spain.

How much tax? The savings tax brackets for 2025

Under the common Spanish tax regime, adding the state and regional scales gives these marginal rates. They apply by bracket to the combined taxable savings base, rather than separately to each platform or to the capital invested.

Taxable savings base · tax year 2025
Taxable base bracketCombined rate
Up to €6,00019 %
Over €6,000 and up to €50,00021 %
Over €50,000 and up to €200,00023 %
Over €200,000 and up to €300,00027 %
Over €300,00030 %

The top bracket increased to 30% from 2025. Some older Mintos help pages retain previous tables; this guide uses Spanish legislation and AEAT guidance for the tax year’s rates and form.

Other products, fees and losses

This guide mainly covers interest from loans and Notes. Do not apply that treatment to the whole portfolio without checking:

  • ETFs: separate distributions from gains or losses on sale. A rise in value without a sale is not, by itself, a realised gain.
  • Smart Cash: check the fund documentation and type of income; its name does not make it a bank deposit.
  • Bonds and real estate through Notes: distinguish interest from the transfer or redemption of the instrument.
  • Crypto ETPs are financial instruments, rather than direct cryptocurrency holdings. Check the specific product and transaction.
  • Bonuses, referrals and the Secondary Market: identify each receipt and its nature before grouping it.

Mintos: breakdown by product · Mintos: taxation of ETPs

Not all Mintos fees are deductible. Article 26 distinguishes administration and custody of marketable securities from discretionary individual portfolio management. A fee appearing under Expenses is not sufficient for deduction: check its nature and supporting evidence.

An overdue amount or one in recovery does not automatically become a deductible tax loss either. Rules depend on the instrument and when the loss is recognised. Keep supporting documents and do not subtract the whole pending balance from interest.

What about Form 720?

This is an information reporting obligation separate from income tax. It does not replace the tax return or mean paying tax again on the interest. The €50,000 threshold is assessed for each asset category under its valuation rules, exceptions and subsequent reporting duties: the total Mintos balance alone does not answer the question.

Also gather your other foreign assets and check what each position legally represents and where it is held or managed. Real estate Notes do not make you the direct owner of a property. If classification is unclear, review the documentation and consult a professional before deciding.

AEAT: Form 720 frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Mintos and Spanish tax returns

Do I declare income if I have not withdrawn it?

Withdrawal does not determine taxation. Interest is generally attributed to the period when it becomes due, even if reinvested. Check the specific rules for defaults or disputes.

Does the 5% withholding settle the tax?

It does not settle Spanish income tax. Report the gross amount and check double taxation relief, including its conditions and limits.

What if Mintos is missing from the draft return?

Income is not exempt simply because it was not imported automatically. Reconcile your tax data with the annual report and add what is required, avoiding duplicate entries.

Can I use Creditplan’s monthly reports for my tax return?

They do not replace your tax report. The journal shows aggregated figures from Javier’s account and may combine periods from different years. Use your own documents for the specific tax year.

What if I already filed and forgot Mintos?

Review the filed return and the amendment procedure for that tax year. For the 2025 return, the AEAT provides the rectifying self-assessment procedure. The effects depend on the change and whether it is made after the deadline.

AEAT: amend a filed return

Before filing

  • Tax year, ownership and currencies checked.
  • Gross interest separated from principal, sales and bonuses.
  • Foreign tax documented and not duplicated as Spanish withholding.
  • Expenses and losses reviewed according to their nature.
  • Imported data reconciled, without duplicates.
  • Report, annexes and supporting documents saved.

Sources, scope and review

Documentary review: 25 October 2026. Tax return boxes checked against the official 2025 Spanish form; rules and rates checked against income tax law and the AEAT manual. Mintos help is used for its reports and operation. Examples are fictitious and do not describe a return filed by Javier.

This guide does not cover every special tax regime, residence in other countries or the foral tax regimes. If your circumstances change the treatment, check the documentation with the AEAT or a tax adviser. The review date does not imply an individual professional assessment.
